The summer of 1989 was a particularly turbulent one for Walter Chaw, who found solace in a little movie about the end of the world, Steve De Jarnatt's genre-bending "Miracle Mile". Part memoir, part critical study, and featuring the participation of writer-director De Jarnatt, this monograph is an utterly unique chronicle of the Reagan era that examines how the most public of media can give meaning to the most private apocalypse.

I absolutely love the film Miracle Mile, although I have trouble explaining exactly why beyond the obvious charms it has. Wanting to learn more about the film I love, I discovered this book and devoured it in 2 nights, eager for further insights. It did give me some of what I sought, opening my eyes to some things I'd missed, but I was rather disappointed that less than half the book is about Miracle Mile, the other half about... all sorts of other things. The author seems to assume the reader has watched all the same films and read all the same books, spouting references that attempt cleverness while just distancing me from whatever he was trying to say.

This is a quick read with a few interesting insights into a terrific film that hasn't yet gotten the love it deserves. I guess I was mistaken thinking this would be mostly about the nominal film, in my eagerness to devour a one-sided conversation about the characters, events and ideas that I enjoy in Miracle Mile I didn't realize this came with a lot of extra baggage. Which may appeal to some, I wish the author much success, I just also wish there was a bit more nuclear fusion in this missive (did I just lose points for a bad pun attempt?). A bit too cleverly written for my taste, but happy for any discussion of Miracle Mile. Thanks.

Miracle Mile Walter Chaw 9781105946486 Books Reviews

Walter Chaw's first monograph is simply stunning in its ability to meld the personal and lyrical with the analytic and critical. This is a wonderful example of how memoir and film writing can intersect--and also of why films can be so important in our lives. Whether you're interested in this particular film or just want to learn how great (and creative) film writing can be, this book is for you. A tour de force.
I like this book and its author so much that I named my first born son after him.

5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
An incredible read of an incredible movie...personal, direct and highly informative every page. Chaw is simply one of the best film critics working today.
Boring self indulgent drivel. I could write a long discursive assessment, which is what the book does but why? Cool cover though.
Walter’s writing is in a different class, and this book is so painfully personal and astonishingly honest that it left me staggered. It’s not just one of the most extensive analysis’ of a film I’ve ever come across, but it’s also a wonderful testament to the power of the medium as a tool to help one heal. I continue to learn about myself by reading the work of those like Walter.
Walter Chaw is such a fun writer. He’s got this cool and enjoyable way about him & his writing feels almost like you’re reading summer camp letters from your cool, older brother who is schooling you on fun subjects that you have a shared interest in.

I enjoyed every word of this book. I wish it had been longer as I feel he has more cool stuff to talk about. I remember seeing Miracle Mile in the summer of 1990 as a 10 yr old and it really moved and shocked me and my brother.

He doesn’t disappoint. This book is worth every penny and I’m glad I found it. Enjoyed rereading it.
Walter Chaw is an excellent writer. I have read his film reviews for many years; he is capable of startling insights, as in his review of Night Moves (1975), when he identifies the key moment of the film and describes its dread; his description of Where the Wild Things Are as evoking the “mechanism of regret”; his connection of Milton’s “Hymn On the Morning of Christ’s Nativity” to Hellboy II. The review index at Film Freak Central is worth a few years of your time.

Chaw’s monograph on Miracle Mile is similarly insightful. The depth of his examination is impressive. I watched the film for the first time directly before reading the book and several times after. It’s more than a fascinating artifact. It lingers.

The book is indeed self-indulgent; Chaw acknowledges that straightaway, so I don’t think anyone should complain of false advertising. The description of the book is accurate; it relates the movie to a private apocalypse. While it is packed with fascinating and enlightening details regarding the film and its director, it is not an encyclopedia article.

Chaw writes acidly on many subjects, including Christianity. As a Christian, I find his writing uncomfortable at times. Likewise, my political views do not align with his. This book presents a definite religious and political perspective. It could bother you.

But you mustn't read only writers you agree with. You mustn't read only studiously apolitical, impersonal books on film. Nothing is ever “just a movie.” Miracle Mile isn’t. I’ve had sustained arguments – heated ones – over my hatred of Forrest Gump. There’s a reason for that.

When Chaw writes “Religion is a growth business because its stock in trade is misery and archetype(…),” I can’t agree. I’ll admit I’ve never taken part in a celluloid communion. I don’t think I’ve ever had a religious experience in a theater. But I understand that longing. And when he writes that The Fly (1986) taught him about love, I believe him.
